What is DBT?

DBT designed by Marsha Linehan, created specifically for folks who had been given the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, the symptoms of which consist of emotional experiences that are more intense than the average person’s, with a slower return to baseline. These folks often experience chronically volatile relationships with other people, themselves, their bodies, and their ability to see hope in the world. DBT quickly became the gold standard for treatment in this population and has shown success in treating a variety of other populations as well.

Model Adherent DBT consists of 4 components: Individual weekly DBT therapy, DBT skills group, Skills Coaching available 24/7, and each therapist offering model adherent DBT must participate in a consultation group with other DBT therapists. We offer individual DBT therapy at WTF Counseling and skills coaching is available through a free-to-client text app 24/7. I also participate in a DBT consultation team twice monthly.

DBT Skills Group

DBT skills group is divided into 4 modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Many skills groups are run in such a way that a group learns all of the DBT skills within 6 months, meeting once a week. This timetable makes sense to many people and they can understand and apply DBT skills to their daily lives within this amount of time. However, many people repeat the full DBT curriculum twice for a year's worth of skills training. This model works for a lot of people, one could say *most* people, some folks, such as myself, need more time, as these concepts are just plain foreign and take much more conversation to grasp.

All respect to Marsha, we believe that the DBT skills group could use a bit of a slow down.

Introducing Slow DBT

To meet the needs of this population, those who need a little longer to discuss and grasp certain concepts, we here at WTF Counseling are proud to introduce Slow DBT. This program will combine the manualized DBT skills group with a bit more time and discussion with each group only moving on to the next skill concept when there is an understanding of the material, rather than time-bound by the model. This means each group cohort will be a little out of step with the other groups, so switching between them may be difficult. This will also allow for rolling enrollment, not having to wait for a new module to begin before joining the group.

Some rules of our DBT Skills Group

You will need an individual therapist that you see preferably weekly while participating in our skills group, to have the proper support needed for generalizing DBT skills, we cannot allow clients who see their individual therapists less than twice a month. You can see a therapist outside of the WTF practice; This therapist doesn't have to be trained in DBT AND it can be super helpful. Your therapist will need to agree to a discussion with a skills trainer to identify possible growth points, once you have signed a release of information allowing the two clinicians to discuss your case. We won't be able to allow clients unwilling to allow this collaboration with their independent therapists.

If not a current individual client of WTF Counseling each potential member will need to complete a 50-minute assessment session with a skills trainer, to assess for appropriateness of fit and orientation to the DBT model. This can be billed to insurance and after you submit the form below, you will be contacted within two business days to schedule that appointment. If you are planning to pay entirely out of pocket, the cash price of the assessment is $125 for a 50-minute session.

We have two different skills groups available currently, both via zoom due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic.

We will attempt to bill insurance for skills group sessions or you can pay out of pocket for the cost of each group. Sometimes insurance companies do not cover group therapy and in these instances, you would be responsible for the cost of the group out of pocket.  There were will be no more than 8 people in each group. Once both groups are filled there is the possibility of more groups being formed, as well as the possibility of needing to be put on our waitlist.

The rules mentioned are not complete and just set the groundwork for understanding what you can expect from a skills group, DBT is a model that calls for a time commitment in addition to a commitment to being uncomfortable while fighting for the life you want. Or to being uncomfortable while figuring out how to want to live. We are all in this together, let's get started!
